If you have decided to book an appointment for a massage, you have already taken the first step towards improving your physical and mental well-being. We will often get folks new to receiving professional massages that ask, “Is there anything I need to do after the massage is over?” It’s a great question, because there is plenty you can do to maximize the effectiveness and prolong the benefits of massage.

Here are some things to keep in mind when you get home from your massage:

Drink Water

Hydrating after a deep tissue massage is crucial, as a lack of fluids will exacerbate any general muscle soreness felt after the massage. Drinking 16 to 20 ounces of water after the massage will flush out excess toxins released from the muscles as well as decrease soreness.

Do Some Light Stretching

After a massage your muscles are warm, relaxed and most pliable, making it the perfect opportunity to work on your flexibility.  Light static stretching can help elongate muscle fibers without the excess risk associated to stretching cold (i.e. muscle tears, spasms, etc.)

Take a Hot Bath

Another excellent way to limit common post-massage effects is to take a hot bath loaded with Epsom salt. Epsom salt has long been known for their anti-inflammatory properties and can really cut down on soreness. The hot water will also help further relax your muscles, combining to essentially prolong the positive effects of the massage while limiting the negative effects.

Eat A Healthy Snack

Feeling a bit lightheaded? It’s completely normal, and is more than likely a reaction to the heightened levels of relaxation following a massage. A snack rich with electrolytes, like nuts or fruit, will give you a nice energy boost keep you feeling alert.

Follow this tips after your massage therapy session is complete, and you’ll be sure to enjoy the benefits of massage long after you’ve left our offices.
